SONG REVIEW: Hannah Robinson’s ‘You Won’t Ever Know
Newcastle-based alt-rock artist Hannah Robinson released her latest single, ‘You Won’t Ever Know’, on October 9th. Blending dark, dreamy shoegaze with grungy guitars and soft, whimsical vocals, the track explores themes of abandonment and emotional distance, sitting somewhere between atmospheric alternative rock and something more intimate.
The repeated line “you won’t ever know, because you never ask” forms the centre of the chorus, creating a hook that stays with you long after the song ends - like an earworm you don’t want to go away. There’s a sense of frustration behind the lyrics, touching on the feeling of being misunderstood by people who never make the effort to understand you. Its repetition gives the song a memorable quality without taking away from the emotion behind it.
The grungy guitar work adds weight to the track, but never overpowers Hannah’s vocals. Instead, the contrast between the heavier instrumentation and her more delicate yet frustrated delivery gives the song its distinctive sound. Her lyrics are hauntingly beautiful, fitting naturally into the darker atmosphere of the production.
Speaking about the single, Robinson described it as “a raw exploration of abandonment, channelled through a sound that feels like a direct confrontation with those who have chose to listen.” This comes through in the song’s mix of vulnerability and resentment, with the lyrics feeling direct without becoming overly explicit.
The vampire-inspired visuals accompanying the release also complement the track well. Their darker aesthetic reflects the atmosphere of the music and fits with Hannah’s wider image as an artist. Both the visuals and sound feel considered, contributing to a clear creative direction that carries through the release.
Robinson is set to headline Freight Island in Newcastle on Thursday 15th October, with Wool supporting as part of the Mercury Prize Fringe Festival. The show offers a chance to hear her latest material live as she continues to establish herself within the North East’s alternative music scene.
‘You Won’t Ever Know’ is a considered release that brings together shoegaze textures, grungy guitars and introspective songwriting. Its understated delivery and memorable chorus make it an effective exploration of abandonment, while its cohesive sound and visuals further establish Robinson’s artistic identity.
